New research suggests prior mental health conditions can affect the recovery from total joint replacement surgery.

Two new studies, presented at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), suggest understanding an individual’s mental health status is an important factor for achieving the best outcome after surgery.

The knowledge is meaningful for obtaining improved clinical and generic (patient-satisfaction) outcomes two measures that will influence future reimbursement schedules for surgeons. <

FDA: Lead Found In 400 Lipsticks

 You may need to worry about more than lipstick on your teeth the next time you pucker up.

A new analysis by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration shows that 400 of the most popular lipsticks on the market contain traces of lead, the Washington Post reported.

Five lipsticks made by LOreal and Maybelline ranked among the top 10 most contaminated of the cosmetics, according to the FDA tests. Read more…

Latest US drug shortage hits children with leukaemia

Stocks of a vital cancer drug are running low in the US, which could affect children with leukaemia within weeks.

The US Food and Drug Administration says a number of drug manufacturers are flagging up shortages in methotrexate – which slows the growth of white blood cells in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a cancer that typically affects young children.

Manufacturing delays and unexpectedly high levels of demand are blamed for the shortfall, together with the voluntary closure of Ben Venue Laboratories, one of the nation’s largest suppliers of the drug.

Moms lobby for ‘beautiful and bald’ Barbie for young cancer patients

NEW YORK — Barbie has been an astronaut, an architect, a Nascar driver, and a news anchor. Now, there’s an online movement to get her to attempt what could be her biggest feat yet: going bald to fight cancer. A Facebook page titled “Beautiful and Bald Barbie! Let’s see if we can get it made” was started a few days before Christmas. By Wednesday afternoon, the page had more than 15,000 fans. The goal is to get toy maker Mattel Inc. to create a bald Barbie in support of children with cancer.
