Diabetic Kids’ Poor Sleep Hampers Blood Sugar, School Performance

Researchers believe sleep problems may compromise the physical and mental health of Type 1 diabetics.

A new study suggests sleep disorders among young diabetics can contribute to misbehavior, worse control of their blood sugar and poor school performance.

Despite adhering to recommendations for good diabetic health, many youth with Type 1 diabetes have difficulty maintaining control of their blood sugars, said Michelle Perfect, Ph.D., the principal investigator in the study.

We found that it could be due to abnormalities in sleep, such as daytime sleepiness, lighter sleep and sleep apnea.

Gestures help grasp new languages more easily

People learn new languages more easily when words are accompanied by gestures, a new study has found.

For the new study, Manuela Macedonia and Thomas Knosche from the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, Germany, enrolled 20 volunteers for a six-day course to learn Vimmi.

Vimmi is an artificial language designed to make study results easier to interpret, a media report said.

The volunteers were taught half of the material using spoken and written instructions and exercises, while the other half was taught with body movements to accompany each word, which the students were asked to act out.
