How to Use a Seine for Fishing
Seine nets have been used for thousands of years. They are dragnets weighted on the bottom and with floaters along the top. The two ends have a handle or rope which is dragged against the current by an operator on each end. The seine is gathered together, taken up on shore and the catch is dumped. The operators then sort through the catch keeping what is wanted and discarding the rest.
Things You’ll Need
- Seine net
- Helper
- 5-gallon bucket
-
- 1
Stretch out the net, removing any tangles or knots. Drape the weighted portion toward the ground and have the floaters on top.
- 2
Enter the water at the location to be seined. The water should not be over knee deep for seining operations.
- 3
Let the seine down into water with the weighted portion being toward the bottom and the floating end on top of the water. Hold the bottom down with the handles or ropes.
- 4
Drag the seine slowly upstream with the helper walking directly across from you. If seining a lake walk toward the shore.
- 5
Raise the seine every two or three minutes and check the catch.
- 6
Raise the weighted area to the surface and then the floating end letting water drain through the seine.
- 7
Carry the seine to the shore and collect the desirable fish into the 5-gallon bucket.
- 8
Release any unwanted fish back into the water.
