How to Remove a Berdan Primer
A primer is one of the components in modern metallic firearms cartridges. The primer is a essentially a small explosive charge in the base of the cartridge that, when struck by the firing pin, detonates and ignites the powde, resulting in the pressure that forces the bullet out of the gun’s barrel. There are two primary types of primers: Boxer primers and Berdan primers. Boxer primers are by far the most common, and thus a wide variety of tools are available for their removal. Removing Berdan primers correctly, however, requires a different tool.
Things You’ll Need

Verify that the primer has already been fired. Removing unfired primers is unsafe and may result in injury. Fired primers should have a significant dent in them from the firing pin, and the cartridge should have expended its bullet and powder.
- 2
Insert the case holder rod into the open end of the cartridge case.
- 3
Hook the jaw of the decapping tool underneath the rim of the cartridge casing.
- 4
Press the pin of the decapping tool into the firing pin dent on the primer.
- 5
Press the handle of the decapping tool firmly until the primer is removed.
