How to Hunt Clams

So you’ve fished for shark, marlin, octopus and crab, but have you ever hunted clams? Clam digging is easy to pick up but difficult to master. Unlike other fishing sports, which are wait-and-see activities, clamming requires actively searching for your prey. Clams bury themselves in the damp sand of the seashore, just waiting for you to find them and dig them out like succulent buried treasure.

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need

  • Clamming shovel
  • Holding net
  • Fishing waders

Check with your state’s Department of Fish and Game about obtaining a clamming license. Harvesting clams requires a license, like any other hunting or fishing activity. You will be informed of any state limitations on the number of clams caught as well as popular beaches for clamming.

Purchase a clam shovel and a net that can be attached to your waist. Clamming shovels are specially made shovels with a backwards-facing, curved blade, similar to a garden hoe. The net for holding your catch should hang at your hip to keep both your hands free to dig. A pair of waders or waterproof boots are also useful for hunting in the surf.

Search the shoreline for a show. A show is a small hole in the sand left by the clam as it digs its way down. The show is about the size of a dime and can come in three shapes: a dimple (incomplete hole), a doughnut (a raised ring with a hole in the center) and a keyhole (a perfectly round hole in the smooth sand).

Place your shovel 4 to 6 inches from the show, towards the water, and pull upward and toward your body to remove sand. Be cautious when digging so you don’t damage the clam with your shovel. Keep the blade vertical to lower the chance of cracking the clam with the sharp edge if you do hit it.

Continue digging until the clam is exposed enough to reach in and grab it with your hand. The clam will be buried in the sand vertically. Toss the clam in your bag and repeat the process for your next clam.
