High level of bacteria prompts health warning

A health warning has been issued for Akaroa, after tests found high levels of faecal bacteria.

Water samples taken by Environment Canterbury found the water unsafe at Akaroa Main Beach and Glen Bay.

Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said in most cases the ill-effects of exposure to contaminated water were minor and short-lived.

But he said there was potential for more serious diseases such as hepatitis A, giardia, campylobacter and salmonella.

Eating shellfish from the sites should also be avoided, he warned.
