Exercise associated with lower rate of fractures in elderly women

“Falls are responsible for at least 90 percent of all hip fractures,” the authors write as background in the article. “Hip fractures place the greatest demands on resources and have the greatest effect on patients because they are associated with high mortality rates and increased morbidity.” Raija Korpelainen, Ph.D., of Oulu Deaconess Institute, Oulu, Finland, and colleagues performed an extended follow-up of 160 women who participated in a randomized trial aimed at reducing risk factors for fractures in elderly women with osteopenia (a reduction in bone mass, or low levels of bone calcium).

Of the 160 women who participated in the randomized control trial, 84 were assigned to an exercise group, while the remaining 76 were placed in the control group.

Sugary sports drinks mistakenly associated with being healthy, say researchers

“Children and parents associate these drinks with a healthy lifestyle despite their increased amount of sugar and lack of nutritional value,” said Nalini Ranjit, Ph.D., principal investigator and assistant professor of behavioral sciences at the UTHealth School of Public Health. The study will be published in the October issue of Pediatrics.

Researchers examined the association between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, unhealthy and healthy foods and physical activity levels of 8th and 11th grade Texas students to determine the relationship between beverage consumption and other behaviors.

Doctor’s health habits affect patient counseling

Factors that predicted confidence in counseling included the doctor’s own exercise time, being overweight, and if the doctor had adequate training in counseling patients.

The study, published online ahead of print Oct. 1 in Preventive Cardiology, shows doctors’ own health habits matter when it comes to patient counseling.

“Living a healthy lifestyle themselves translates into a more believable message to their patients,” says lead author Michael Howe, M.D., chief medical resident at U-M Health System.

ACAC to Expand in Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — ACAC Fitness & Wellness Center is adding a new club in Richmond, VA, its second facility in that city. The club company also has one club in West Chester, PA, and four in Charlottesville, VA, where the company is headquartered.
