Smoking cessation counselling and treatment during routine HIV care helps patients to quit

The provision of smoking cessation counselling and therapy during routine HIV care increases the chances that patients will quit smoking and stay stopped, according to Swiss research published in HIV Medicine.

Physicians at the Zurich HIV clinic received training about smoking cessation counselling and the use of medication to help those wanting to quit.

Compared to other patients in the Swiss HIV Cohort, individuals who received their care in Zurich were more likely to stop smoking and also less likely to restart smoking after they had quit.

Most New Year’s resolutions to end today

Today is the day most people will give up their New Year”s resolutions – just nine days after they were made.

A new survey suggests three-quarters of people in Britain will buckle and break their plans to get fit, save money and lose weight.

Only one in four of 3,000 adults surveyed was confident of maintaining his or her resolve throughout January.

The survey by allabouthealth.org.uk revealed that physical and emotional well-being topped priority lists for 2012.

Seven out of 10 joined a gym or went for a jog in the last two weeks, the Daily Express reported.

$5,000 Given To Family Of Girl Battling Leukemia

   

  • A Nashua girl battling leukemia got some help Tuesday from law enforcement.

    Stacey Lacroix, 11, has been fighting acute lymphoblastic leukemia since June.

    It’s a rare and painful form of cancer.

    “I pretty much had to stay inside of the hospital. I couldn’t even get outside to go to the garden at Children’s [Hospital Boston],” she said.

    Stacey’s mother, Lilybeth, who is caring for her daughter alone, recently lost her job.

    On Tuesday, the Lacroixs were presented with a $5,000 check from Cops for Kids with Cancer, a regional organization that helps families with money for things other than medical bills.
